He describes his personal teaching style as rooted in patience, encouragement and artistic discovery while maintaining a high standard that assists students in reaching their full potential.
Dustin’s academic credentials include a Master of Arts degree in Musicology and Piano Performance from the University of Victoria as well as ARCT diplomas in both Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. Dustin is also a certified RCM teacher and has specialization status for all levels of piano, theory and music history studies. He enjoys performing alongside his students, accompanying other student performers and collaborating with colleagues.
When not teaching or performing music, Dustin enjoys playing complicated board games with his wife, Christine, and their teenage child, Yuki. He is also kept busy by the two family miniature dachshunds, Anastasia (Ana) and Theodore (Theo). Dustin and his family are strong supporters of the LGBTQ community as well as any person in need of love, support and inspiration.

Teaching Method:
Dustin uses a wide variety of methods and curricula in his teaching to accommodate the specific needs and goals of each student. The fundamental principals behind his teaching approach are rooted in mindfulness, intent and artistry. For students looking for more traditional approaches to piano studies, Dustin is very experienced with conservatory programs such as the Royal Conservatory curriculum and Conservatory Canada curriculum. Dustin is an RCM certified teacher for all levels of practical piano (Prep, 1-10 and ARCT), music history and music theory / harmony. Dustin draws on these resources regularly for all students.
Genres:
Dustin is classically trained but regularly teaches additional genres such as jazz, pop, musical theatre, video-game music and anime. Students can also choose to learn about arranging, chording and accompanying.
Group Options:
Lessons are one-on-one only at this time. Ensemble work is integrated into lessons in the form of duet work with the teacher.
Performance Opportunities:
Dustin encourages students to perform in the PGCM recitals, the PG & District Music Festival and any additional suitable opportunities that may occur in the year. Performing for others is a difficult challenge for many students but Dustin works carefully to prepare students and develop skills and confidence for performing with composure. Dustin attends his students’ recital and festival performances to support them and help manage any anxieties or concerns.
